Truvada, Viread, Complera, Stribild, Atripla Linked to Kidney Disease

Truvada, Viread, Complera, Stribild, and Atripla are prescription antiretroviral medications created by the manufacturer- Gilead Sciences, Inc. and are used to treat retroviruses especially HIV. These drugs contain the dangerous ingredient tenofovir disoproxil (TDF). For HIV positive patients’ renal failure is a common side effect however drugs made with TDF increase this risk. Drugs containing TDF clog the filtration function of kidneys, and over time create side effects such as kidney failure and renal impairment. These conditions often lead to osteoporosis, bone fractures, and brittle bones.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. created a safer, FDA approved alternative to TDF called TAF, however they chose to continue the use of TDF anyway in order to maintain growing profits. They allowed TDF drugs to be sold for a decade with the dangerous ingredient making approximately $11 billion in annual sales. Now millions of Americans are suffering from permanent damage because Gilead wanted to take control over the tenofovir market.

The FDA sent out warning letters explaining how Gilead allowed the medications to be prescribed without warning patients about their dangerous side effects or replacing the drug with a safer medication, however filing a lawsuit is the only way to hold Gilead liable for their actions. Individuals or families of individuals who have taken or are taking antiretrovirals such as Truvada, Viread, Stribild, Atripla, Symfi Lo, AccessPak, Kaletra, AccessPak, Viracept, Complera, Cimduo, or Genvoya for HIV PEP may be eligible for compensation.
